Working Remotely Can Make Your Kids Smarter

What's Inside:

  • The 9% Advantage: How remote work is changing your kids' test scores (and futures).

  • The Inequality Problem: Why remote work is widening the educational gap, and what you can do.

  • Your RTO Comeback: What to tell your boss when they want you back in the office.

  • This Week's Remote Jobs: This week’s fully vetted remote roles

  • FREE Masterclass (Jan 22nd): The 3-step strategy to land a remote role without compromising your standards.

You already know remote work saves you multiple hours of commuting hell every day.

But here's what you don't know: those hours are changing your kids' futures.

A massive study out of the Netherlands dropped some data that should make every parent pay attention. Researchers tracked 14,000+ kids whose parents gained the right to work from home through their company agreements.

The results showed that kids whose parents could work remotely scored 9% higher on their national exams.

9%!!

That's the difference between vocational track and college prep. Between limiting options and opening doors.

The Mechanism

You don't need to helicopter parent or become a substitute teacher. The study suggests it's simpler than that:

Presence.

Being home when your kid gets back from school. Checking in on homework between meetings. Having dinner together instead of arriving after 7 pm, fried from the commute.

The research shows the biggest gains for kids in the middle of the achievement distribution, the ones who just needed a bit more support to succeed.

Addressing Inequality

The same study revealed something uncomfortable: remote work is increasing educational inequality.

Parents in professional roles, higher earners, more educated workers, they're the ones getting remote options. Their kids are already performing better. Now they're pulling even further ahead.

Meanwhile, parents in non-teleworkable jobs (service workers, manual labor, healthcare) can't access this advantage. Their kids fall further behind.

What You Can Do With This Information

First, stop letting anyone tell you that wanting remote work makes you "less committed" to your career. The data says you can work remotely, maintain the same productivity (or more in some cases), and still be there for your kid's education in ways that matter.

Second, if you're in a position to influence policy at your company, push for remote options. Not as a perk for senior staff, but as a benefit available to everyone who can do their job remotely.

Third, realize that the fight for remote work isn't just about your commute. It's about the next generation.

Your manager wants you back in the office five days a week?

Show them the data. Tell them they're not just impacting your productivity, they're impacting your kid's educational trajectory.

Maybe that'll make them think twice.

Or maybe it won't. But at least you'll know what kinda boss you have…
